Keep your family fit this winter by, yes, heading outdoors. The Lorain County Metro Parks has three great programs for the snow-bound adventurers. 12882 Diagonal Road, LaGrange, 440-458-5121, metroparks.cc

Sledding. Get an adrenaline rush swooping down Vermilion River Reservation’s hill and warm up in the semi-enclosed shelter. Or slowly slide down Carlisle Reservation’s small hill. The hills are free, but bring your own sled to partake in the winter wonder.

Snowshoeing. Explore off the beaten path with this high-calorie-burning activity at Vermilion and French Creek reservations. Some trails are more challenging, but beginners of all ages can put their toes in the snow at Sandy Ridge and Columbia Reservations, which have flatter trails.

Cross-Country Skiing. Pump up your heart rate and strengthen your limbs with this all-body workout at Forest Hills Golf Course and the formal gardens at Schoepfle Center. Bring your skills, since this is more difficult than snowshoeing, and your skis.
