Woodshed Music Lessons has graced downtown Oberlin with its melodies since 2006. Owner Kevin Jones got his start as a singer/songwriter in Washington, D.C., before opening his own shop in Lorain County.
“Music has been my dad’s life. He’s pretty much got an instrument in his hand all waking hours of the day,” says Kevin Jones’ son, Garyn Jones, music instructor and instrument technician at Woodshed.
The company offers music lessons in piano, voice, guitar, drums, ukulele and more to students ranging from five to 60-plus years. No matter the age or the instrument, the instructors take special care to help students develop a love for music. The instructors especially focus on ear training, also known as the ability to hear a song and play along.
“My favorite part is seeing when something starts to click with a student,” Garyn Jones says.
Woodshed’s 100-plus students then have the chance to show off their skills at recitals and open-mic afternoons, which are held every Friday from noon to 1:30 p.m.
