Arts & Entertainment
As the sun begins to dip below the horizon and the heat of the afternoon fades, the energy in Lorain County shifts from the winding park trails to the vibrant outdoor stages. Summer nights here are defined by the rhythm of the river, crack of a baseball bat and harmonious sounds of communities gathering under the open sky.
Rockin’ on the River (ROTR) in Lorain is the undisputed heavyweight of the summer entertainment scene, drawing massive crowds and electrifying the waterfront. Celebrating its 40th anniversary this season, the event has called Black River Landing home for the past 12 years.
“Rockin’ on the River is where you’re at on a summer Friday night in Lorain,” says Tiffany McClelland, executive director of the Lorain Port and Finance Authority. With a brand-new amphitheater that opened on June 5, the venue is ready to host crowds of around 5,000 people per show.
“The atmosphere is unparalleled, as we offer over 15 acres to roam along the Black River in the shadow of the Charles Berry Bridge,” McClelland adds. “Whether you want to stand in front of the stage and get close to the band, walk the festival pavilion area, sit on the slope and relax, go down to the docks or just walk the entire site and socialize, Black River Landing and ROTR has it all for you.”
This year’s greatest hits lineup features national country artists Chris Lane and Tyler Farr on Sept. 4th, along with the highly anticipated return of the Pink Floyd tribute band, Wish You Were Here. Visitors can feast from 12 food vendors offering gyros, pizza, barbecue and walking tacos while enjoying milkshakes, slushies, draft beer and cocktail offerings.
But the music does not stop at the landing. The Lorain County Metro Parks’ Summer Concert Series provides free outdoor entertainment on Thursday and Sunday evenings at Lakeview Park, Miller Nature Preserve and Vermilion River Reservation.
“Lorain County comes alive in the summer with outdoor entertainment,” Deitz notes. “These experiences combine fresh air, local talent, and a strong sense of community, making them a highlight of the season.”
For a touch of history and charm, the Bandstand at Tappan Square in Oberlin remains a beloved venue for evening performances, offering a picturesque, collegiate-town atmosphere where locals gather under the trees. If theatrical performances are more your style, the French Creek Theatre in Sheffield Village produces excellent summer programming, allowing visitors to complement a day of hiking with high-quality cultural enrichment.
For those who prefer the roar of the crowd to the sound of a guitar, a Lake Erie Crushers game at ForeFront Field in Avon is a summer essential. The stadium offers an intimate, highly engaging baseball experience that’s perfect for families, featuring promotions, affordable concessions and a festive atmosphere where every seat feels close to the action.
If you’d rather be out on the water enjoying the evening breeze, the Oasis Marinas at Port Lorain serves as a vital gateway. It’s the launching point for incredible guided tours provided by the Lorain Port and Finance Authority.
“The Black River Boat Tours feature the History Excursion, River Nature Tour, Sunset Cruise and Sip n’ Sway as options to choose from,” McClelland notes, adding that these 1.5-to- two-hour tours include a scenic pass by the historic Lorain Lighthouse and feature narration by a captain or Lorain Historical Society historian. “Participants are able to see Lorain from a different perspective and learn about the city’s waterfront and industrial roots.”
The Sip n’ Sway tour is a unique option for adults 21 and over, allowing riders to bring their own beer or wine to enjoy on the water. Meanwhile, the Sunset Cruise offers a 1.5-hour trip perfectly timed to align with a breathtaking Lake Erie sunset. For a truly unforgettable evening, the port provides shuttle services for lighthouse tours and Lighthouse Sunset Wine Dinners, where guests are treated to a multicourse meal catered by Lorain Brewing Co., with each dish paired with a beverage to enjoy at the lighthouse.
